Using Maya: Fixing problems.

When producing my two columns of my door, I noticed a problem when I tried to divide my mesh using the 'Insert edge loop' tool. I could only make an edge around a certain part of the object.

When I tried to delete the affected edges, a error message appeared saying I could delete a border edge. This meant something was going wrong on the inside NOT the outside.

On the inside I noticed the problem. There was a face stretching across the length of the object and an extra edge that followed a similar pattern.

To fix this, I used the vertex tool to play around with the affected areas. As I pulled out the vertex, I noticed it began to make three extra faces, this was due to two vertexes being in the same place.

To fix this, I selected the faces tool and deleted the wrong surfaces...

Like this...

The easiest way to fix the problem was to use the 'Merge Vertex Tool'.

This combines both vertexes into one and therefore eliminating the problem occurring in the future.
I had to follow this procedure around the affect areas/vertexes.

Once this I finished fixing the vertex problems, a face had to be deleted due to the problem.

To fix this I used the 'Append Poly' tool. This fills the gap.

I click on each corner where I wanted to fix the object by adding a face to the hole. This is highlighted in pink.
Once I finished going over the corners, I pressed enter and this filled the hole.

I could then delete those edges that had the problem and the error message.

To check that everything had been fixing on this column, I tried remaking an edge loop.

AND! to my advantage it worked!
