Digital Modelling: Door Designs

Digital Modelling: Existing Door photos

I decided to take some photographs of the doors around where I live.

The aesthetics that caught my attention were the incredible amount of detail that went into not only the door construction, but the surrounding frames/arches. It was also interesting to see how the materials varied from woods, metals, marble and stone. You begin to understand the level of skill and creativity it took to make such attractive doors.

Here are some doors that I found:

Digital Modelling: Door Research

I think it's better to look at a broader spectrum of designs, as not only will it aid my understanding of the general structure, it will also inspire me when it comes to designing my own door. I ideally want to focus on doors from different histories and cultures, because I can look at all the different ways doors have been created across the world.

Historical Doors:

It's interesting to see how historical doors carry a lot of personality to them in terms of appeal etc. They're very highly detailed in ways that represent cultures or lifestyles at the time, such as the use of statues, imagery or shapes that usually appear around the 'archways'. You really get that sense of hard work when you look at an older door, because of the materials used and how they were manipulated to create beautiful details. Such materials as iron, stone, marble and wood are all used and refined to create multiple shapes and patterns that decorate the surface. Here are some doors showing those methods:

 . Medieval door

 . Roman door

. Cathedral door

Cultural Doors:

Cultural doors are fascinating in a variety of aspects, especially due to the different lifestyles or beliefs. These are often identified with the use of traditional folklore Incorporated within the doors initial design, For example this Chinese door uses multiple references to their culture and spirituality. The red represents luck or integrity and even ways to ward of evil spirits. The door knockers represent the great 'Chinese Lion' which is known as a mythical creature that protects entrances to important places, such as temples etc. Methods like this really fascinate me and I think it's important to take these ideas on board when it comes to making my own door.

 . Chinese door

. Japanese sliding door

. Egyptian doors to the Afterlife

. Western Saloon Door

Misc Doors:

Doors created from original ideas that do not really exist in real life or are not specifically used as a common entrance/exit. Sometimes have very complex designs which often cannot even be recognized as a door, which I find interesting in it's innovation.

. Fairy Tale Door

. Vault Door

. Video Game Door (Alien)

. Blast Door

. Submarine Door/Hatch
